Scavland Beginner Guide: Surviving Your First Hours
Start here: Scavland does not teach itself
You wake up in Zalesye with nothing, in a world NoShadow describes as doing its best to kill you. The game hands you a role — you are a Vulture, a scavenger — and then leaves the rules to you.
Steam’s own achievement data shows exactly where that lands. 59.2% of owners have searched a ruined building. 30.6% have reached the Lake. Only 4.1% have settled into the scavenging loop that the game is actually about. That drop is not a difficulty curve, it is a knowledge gap, and NoShadow agreed publicly one day after launch: a more forgiving mode and better guidance are on the way, but they are not here yet.
Until then, here is what the first hours actually require.
1. Saving is manual, and it is the whole safety net
There is no autosave documented as of 5 September 2026. Quicksave before you enter a settlement, before you accept a contract, and before you go underground. Dying drops your gear where you fell and you can go back for it — but a crash without a save costs you everything since your last one, which was the loudest complaint of launch week. Full detail on saves and death.
2. Aiming is a sensor, not just a trigger
Raising your weapon increases your vision distance, so aiming spots enemies sooner than walking does. There is a second signal hidden in the crosshair: when solid collision blocks your line of fire, the centre dot becomes a red X. Doors, trees, corners and wreckage all trigger it. Use aim to confirm the lane before you commit to the fight, not after.
3. The fight is not over when the shooting stops
Human projectiles cause bleeding. Finishing a firefight with health remaining does not mean you are safe, and the classic new-player death is opening a body while a wound drains you. One useful exception: a shotgun blast applies a maximum of one bleed effect, not one per pellet.
Check status first, loot second. It costs two seconds. See survival systems.
4. Condition decides whether your gun works
Weapons degrade, can be repaired, and low-durability weapons suffer catastrophic malfunctions — the Steam store page warns about jams directly. A stronger rifle you cannot trust is not an upgrade. Before you take a contract, ask which weapon will still fire when you get one clean shot, not which one has the bigger number. See weapons, condition and jams.
5. Pick one trader and grow them
Traders have role-based buying restrictions, so the valuable thing filling your backpack may be valuable to the wrong person. Their stock is persistent and restocks daily at 06:00 — reopening the menu before then does nothing.
More importantly, completing a job gives experience with the NPC who gave it, and ranking that trader up unlocks exclusive stock in their shop. Spreading contracts across every board spreads your progression thin. See traders and restock.
6. Let the world spend its own ammunition
Scavland runs a life system: NPCs, factions, patrols and creatures move and fight independently. That distant gunfire is not ambience and it is not waiting for you. Sprinting toward it is how you end up between two groups that were already killing each other. Circle, listen, arrive late.
7. Walking an empty road is still progress
The world map reveals roads and information as you explore. An expedition that comes home with nothing may have bought you a safer approach for the next one. Judging every run by loot is how players end up forcing the same dangerous route repeatedly. See the map.
8. What works above ground fails below it
The surface of Zalesye is hand-built and consistent. The underground bunkers are procedurally generated, so one clean run teaches you nothing about the next descent. Prepare for the bunker you have not seen. See bunkers.
Your first hour, in order
- Search the ruined buildings near your start — that is where 59.2% of players get their first achievement, and early loot funds everything else.
- Find the traders and learn who buys what before you haul anything far.
- Take the low-risk contracts from one trader, not from every board.
- Save before each trip out, and check bleeding after each fight.
- Walk one unfamiliar road per trip, even when the backpack is full.
Where the numbers on this page come from
Achievement percentages are Steam’s global unlock rates for app 3373500, captured 5 September 2026; mechanics come from the Steam store description, developer posts on the Steam hub, and timestamped launch-week breakdowns. Nothing here is a guess dressed as a fact — where something is unverified, you will see it labelled that way.
