Scavland Saves & Death: No Autosave, Dropped Gear
Sources checked:
The short version. Saving is manual. There is no automatic save documented as of 2026-09-05, and losing hours to a crash was the loudest complaint of launch week. Quicksave often, and quicksave before anything that looks interesting.
What happens when you die
- Your gear stays where you fell. Players report going back to the death site and recovering their loot, which makes a death expensive rather than final — provided you survive the return trip.
- You can simply reload instead. Because saving is player-controlled, reloading an earlier save undoes the loss entirely. Players have openly asked what the drop mechanic is even for when a reload exists; the honest answer is that it only bites in permadeath.
- Permadeath is a choice you make. Launch coverage describes two ways to play: save-scumming with frequent manual saves, or committing to permadeath and accepting that the run ends when you do.
- The world does not reset around your death. Recent updates keep corpses in the world longer and restore their state when a save is loaded, and trader inventories persist — so the aftermath of a fight is still there when you come back.
Why "no autosave" hurts more here than elsewhere
Scavland is an Early Access build with crash reports in its own discussion hub — handheld PCs and a specific rapid-hotkey bug both came up in launch week. Manual-only saving plus launch-window crashes is the combination players are actually complaining about, not the difficulty of any one fight. It is also why the difficulty conversation and the save conversation keep merging into one thread.
Habits that cost nothing
- Quicksave when you enter a settlement, before you accept a contract, and before you descend into a bunker.
- Quicksave after a successful sale, not before — the money is the part you cannot re-loot.
- After a firefight, check bleeding before you loot; a save taken while you are bleeding out saves the bleeding too. See survival systems.
- If a reputation choice goes wrong, remember that amends are possible in-game — reloading is not the only fix.
