Scavland Survival: Bleeding, Hunger, Radiation & Weight
Sources checked:
Scavland kills you in more ways than combat. Food, water, radiation, injuries and carry weight all run at once, and the deaths that feel unfair are usually one of them finishing a job that a firefight started. Here is what public sources actually confirm about each.
The systems you are managing
| System | What is confirmed | What it means in play |
|---|---|---|
| Bleeding | Human projectiles can cause bleeding. Ending a fight with health left does not mean you are safe — the wound keeps draining while you loot. | Check status before looting, every time |
| Shotgun bleed cap | A single shotgun blast applies a maximum of one bleed effect rather than one per pellet. | Being hit by a shotgun is survivable in a way a burst of rifle fire may not be |
| Hunger | Food is a managed meter; achievement text treats starvation as a distinct, terrible way to go. | Eat before the meter demands it, not after |
| Thirst | Water is tracked separately from food in launch footage. | Carry both, and remember both cost weight |
| Radiation | An environmental meter that spikes in irradiated areas and around exploding mutants. | Retreat is a valid answer; see the hazards page |
| Injuries | Damage is layered — base health plus specific injuries to manage after a fight. | Recovery is a step, not an automatic reset |
| Carry weight | Loot exceeds what you can comfortably carry almost immediately. | The second-most-earned achievement in the game is for over-hoarding |
| Addiction | Smoking can become an addiction, framed in achievement text as something that gets you "even before the War". | A consumable with a downside, not a free buff |
The one that catches everyone: bleeding
The mistake is mechanical, not tactical: you drop the last enemy, see health remaining, and open a body while the wound drains you. Check status first, loot second. It costs two seconds and it is the single most avoidable death in the early game — which is part of why the developers have admitted the opening is too punishing.
Weight is a difficulty setting nobody labels
Hoarder — "got more stuff than I can comfortably carry" — is unlocked by 47.9% of owners, second only to going indoors. Because traders only buy within their role, the valuable thing filling your pack may be valuable to someone three settlements away. Deciding what to leave behind is a real skill here, and Snob of the Apocalypse (18.2%) exists specifically for players who learned it.
Let the world spend its own ammunition
Scavland's life system has NPCs, factions, patrols and creatures moving and fighting independently. Waiting out a distant firefight rather than joining it saves bandages, bullets and health — three resources the game is stingy with. More on how that shapes travel on the map page.
